I think there are five of them.

 Interests

I still play piano, guitar, and harmonica, all pretty badly, but I have fun.

I still write a little.

I still like computer games. Favorites these days are Starbound (I like to play that one with Isaac), Xcom (I usually play on the Classic level, with Ironman enabled, which means I get slaughtered), and anything in the Total War series.

I enjoy music, especially odd-balls like Belle and Sebastian, Texas country, rock, blues, and whatever. I don’t listen to as much jazz these days, but I still enjoy it.

I like to watch sports, especially the Colts, the Jazz, BYU, and the Vols.

Charlotte’s 5th Birthday

I usually get really excited for my children’s birthdays, but sadly, this move put a damper on everything.  I did my best to make her birthday special.  I took a break from trying to pack and tried to find ways to spend time with her during the day.

School was cancelled for bad weather, so Isaac was home all day with us.  He wanted to start teaching Charlotte school things since she was turning 5.  He started making worksheets for her as soon as he woke up and then helped her work on them.12.14.10 Charlotte's 5th Birthday (3)When Ila went down for a nap, we made chocolate ganache for her cupcakes.  12.14.10 Charlotte's 5th Birthday (6)After frosting the cupcakes, we used the leftover ganache to make a graham cracker/banana/ganache birthday treat.12.14.10 Charlotte's 5th Birthday (8)We blew up 5 pink helium balloons with our helium tank.  12.14.10 Charlotte's 5th BirthdayI tried to spend time with her as much as I could during the day.  In the evening we had the dinner of her choice (pasta) and cupcakes.12.14.10 Charlotte's 5th Birthday (33)She also opened her presents. 12.14.10 Charlotte's 5th Birthday (15)The following Saturday we had a little party for her with friends from her primary class and her second cousin Jackson. 12.18.10 Charlotte's 5th birthday party (32) They played games, had a snack, played with dress-ups, opened presents, and had cupcakes.12.18.10 Charlotte's 5th birthday party (13)

Ila at one

What can I say, I adore my little Ila.  Her sweet smiling face melts my heart and I love that she’ll let me hug and cuddle her almost any time I want.  There’s nothing better than cuddling a sweet baby in your arms.

She says “ma ma,” “da da,” “iya” (Ila), “uh, oh” and “no, no, no.”  The last one I think she picked up from Nicole because she sounds just like Nicole when she says it. 11.27.10 Sunsphere adventure (58) She also makes a “meow” when she sees a kitty.  She loves to play games where I make a noise and she repeats it or I repeat a noise or sound that she makes.

She crawls with ease and can walk along furniture.  She likes to stand in a squat sometimes and can balance for a few seconds while standing straight.  She also recently learned how to stand up in the middle of the room from her squatting position.  She does not walk and I’m predicting that she’ll be my slowest walker.

She likes music and when she hears it she often dances by shaking her hands up and down or nodding her head.  She likes to splash and play in the water, but is scared of the bath.  I think it’s because I tried bathing her with Nicole one day and Nicole would not stop pouring water on her head.

Ila is unique from my other children in several ways.  She’s more resistant to other people than my other children were. 11.11.10 Playing Outside (18) Most of the time if I’m holding her and someone reaches out their arms to hold her she will cry, bury her head in my shoulder and cling to my clothing.  At one point she’d do that to people who just talked to her.  If another adult is visiting the house, she acts as if the visitor’s presence is a threat of me leaving and becomes grumpier and clingier.  When I sit on the floor and play with her, she often holds onto my clothing with one hand as she plays.

She loves the gals in the childcare at my gym and it astounds me that she accepts them so willingly.  She usually doesn’t cry when I drop her off and she doesn’t cry and reach out for me when I pick her up.  She will even wait contentedly in someone else’s arms while I finish signing her out.

Ila is also my pickiest eater to date.  While all of my girls refused to take a bottle at some point, the other two girls accepted sippy cups.  Ila is content to only drink milk from her mom.  I have tried a variety of sippy cups holding my milk, formula, and cow’s milk and after weeks of setting them out for her and offering them to her, she finally took one sip yesterday.  That was a huge improvement from crying at the sight of a sippy cup (which she did do seveal times).  I’m still waiting to see if she’ll take a second sip.

Her favorite finger foods are Cheerios and Ritz crackers and she will only eat a few other things.  She refuses to even taste any new food that I place on her tray.  I’ve IMG_4861come to appreciate that stage where babies put everything in their mouth because it means that they actually taste new foods.  She even rejected her birthday cupcake.  She does like baby food, but has become very particular about which food.  If she sees me try to feed her from a jar, she rejects the food before I get it to her mouth.  Her favorite foods come in a little round plastic container.  So if I want to fool her into tasting a new baby food, I have to put it in a plastic container or risk getting the spoon knocked out of my hand.

How the rest of his day was spent.

After the birthday party we had some time before our evening activities.  I took Isaac and Charlotte to the library, then helped Isaac build a Lego set (Ila supervised in her Bumbo).  Isaac and Charlotte played Uno with grandma Bunny and uncle Bryan as I unloaded the dishwasher and prepped for dinner.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (11)My Aunt Dee and my Cousin Brent and his family joined us for dinner, presents, cake and games.  Isaac was pleased with the large stack of presents.

6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (14)

We tried to slow him down and remind him to be grateful, but for some reason he seemed to act like he was in a race to open every one.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (16)

Here’s a shot of some of the family that was there for his birthday:6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (21) The kids ended the day with movie night.  Charlotte and Jackson made beds on the floor in Isaac and Nicole’s room and watched Shaun the Sheep until they fell asleep.  The adults played games until almost 11:00.

Isaac’s 6th Birthday Party

Isaac requested a chocolate cake with a picture of the inside of a machine on top.  My mom and I created this the night before:6.16.10 Isaac's cake (1) After failing to make little broken wires to go in the broken cable we just put the cable back together.  It was suppose to be a water pipe, but the store I went to had black food coloring, but not silver, so it ended up looking more like cables then pipes.6.16.10 Isaac's cake (2)Isaac wanted a birthday party.  He wanted to invite his entire kindergarten class with the exception of the two “naughtiest boys.”  He thought maybe they could come, but they’d have to pay him $100.  We debated numbers and decided he could invite his 6 best friends.  I called one of his best friends to make sure that she could come on that date and time so he’d have at least one of his really good friends there.invitation

Unfortunately, none of his school friends came.  The one who said she could make it, canceled the day before because they had some family come into town.  We called another boy who said he could come, but then woke up with a cough and stayed home.  Isaac was a little disappointed, but he did have his friend Adam from Church and my cousin’s 3-year old son, Jackson came as well.

As I started writing up a schedule, I couldn’t decide where to put each activity.  I knew I wanted the Airblox first as people were arriving and an open ended activity at the end in case the other activities went quickly.  So I listed all the activities, laminated the paper, cut them up, and had the kids draw the next activity.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (3)It was a hot day.  We started out with Airblox.  Isaac was quite sweaty when they came in afterwards.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (34)The kids wrote their names with Twislers Pull ‘n Peels, and then they ate them.

6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (44)

They drew cake next, which was just as well because some of the kids were impatient for cake.  The first cake I made was not cooked completely in the middle (I know, I should have used the toothpick test—I did for the second cake).  We cut the outside ring of the undercooked cake into pieces which we decorated for each kid.  The mini-cakes had the first letter in each kid’s name and a gear.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (47)

For the next activity, they had toothpicks, marshmallows, and gumdrops that they could use to build structures with.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (52) After opening a present from his friend, we started the Kikko building races.  The kids were shown a demonstration and then given a model Kikko structure to build.  The first kid to complete the model got a small candy bar.  The models got increasingly harder.  After some races, the kids built their own designs for a little while.6.17.10 Isaac's Birthday (57)After playing, we built lunch.  The kids each got to build their own pizza on a pita bread with sauce, cheese, and pepperoni.   Each kid left the party with a helium balloon and a gift bag.IMG_0503
