Bedtime at our house

I did my rounds checking on the kids and thought I’d just snap a fairly typical scene about an hour after formal bedtime.

Isaac read a LOT, and had come out to tell Kathleen all about the book:

Charlotte was asleep. Often she’s awake with her cat or just thinking, but sometimes she falls asleep quickly. Usually her bed is a mess; I fixed her blankets for her so she’d be warm.

Nicole almost always falls asleep looking at books. This is a huge Curious George book from the library.

Ila is often in a very silly mood when she ought to be asleep.

Sisters

Charlotte and Nicole are learning to appreciate each other.  They like to be together and they like to hug.  I would still rank Isaac #1 in Charlotte’s choices for a playmate, but I can see the bond growing between my two oldest girls.  Nicole looks up to Charlotte and tries to imitate her and wants to wear Charlotte’s clothes.  It brings joy to my heart to see them love each other

Pictures

Zach has made some good arguments in favor of switching our online photo storage from Flickr to Picasa.  I have not uploaded any pictures to Flickr since he has made this recommendation and now I’m woefully behind.  I thought I’d share some recent shots here with commentary as I mentally prepare for the switchover.

Many more videos

So I’ve taken a few fun videos recently, but neglected to share them, so here they are:

This video of Ila saying the word dancing and dancing was taken before the first step videos that I posted yesterday:

This is a fun one of Nicole falling asleep at the table:

At the end where it looks like she bumps her head and wakes up, she actually stayed asleep and I carried her over to the couch where she had a proper nap.

Here’s some of Charlotte’s dancing (and some singing):

Here is one of Nicole spelling her name:

This one features Ila spelling her name:

Here’s the longer version so you can see it in context:

Ok, I think I got that out of my system.  I promise that next post will not be full of videos!

This is why I am having trouble finding time to pack

Did we mention that we’re moving to Seattle at the end of the month?  I’m more than a little worried that I might not be all packed up in time, but turning my focus from parenting to packing results in things like this:

12.9.10 Nicole's messI thought Nicole had fallen asleep when I hadn’t heard from her for awhile.  Apparently she rejected my nap idea in favor of her own idea which was to empty out all Isaac’s drawers and her clothing and books and then pour baby powder all over everything.  She was so happy and proud of her little disaster that she galloped down the hall happily yelling “big, big mess!”

Happy Birthday Grandpa Bird

From Isaac:image0 Isaac was originally going to write a chapter book about Grandpa’s birthday in which he surprised his grandfather by jumping out of the cake.

From Charlotte:

image1image2 image3image4image5 I wanted her to write her name on the back.  She refused to write it and said that if she wrote her name on the back then her book would be fiction and she wanted it to stay nonfiction.

From Nicole:image6 Nicole sang happy birthday as she colored, but stopped coloring when she recognized another opportunity to eat.

Letters to Grandparents

Here are some letters the kids wrote to their grandparents.  I had them in an envelope to send, but before I put them in the mailbox, we booked some flights for grandma and decided to just give them to her in person.image0 Isaac was going to write a letter to each grandparent, but then he realized how much work writing is for him and decided just to have grandma tell him he loves him too.image1 This is the longest letter Charlotte has hand-written to date.  The pink person in the red box is Charlotte.image2

And this one is from Nicole.

Goose Egg

Nicole bumped her head on Thursday. She had been playing with a blanket on her head when we heard a loud thump and a cry in the hallway. Her head swelled so quickly that it was as if you could actually see it getting bigger and it was very scary looking. I started to panic. The swelling was so abnormal looking that I started imagining the worst, like perhaps she had cracked her head open or something. We were contemplating a run to the ER when we did some quick research on the internet and discovered that it probably wasn’t a big deal. We checked for signs of a concussion and found none. Plus, by this time she had stopped crying and noticed some candy which she promptly requested.10.28.10 Nicole's goose egg (1)We gave her some Tylenol and she refused to let us ice it. Within 10 minutes, the swelling had gone down some and by the next morning you could hardly tell. 10.28.10 Nicole's goose egg (2)I keep waiting for the entire side of her face to turn purple, but so far her hair mostly covers it and it’s hardly even noticeable.10.30.10 Nicole

Puddles

The other day we arrived at the gym after a big rain and Nicole could not resist splashing in every puddle along the way to the entrance. 10.25.10 puddles (4)While this is not an uncommon thing, on this particular day she could not pull herself away from her favorite puddle. I tried the “I’m going to leave you” lie and continued to walk towards the door. She didn’t seem to care at all at first. When I finally did get her attention and she saw how far away we were, she started to run towards me, but after a few paces she stopped and ran back to the puddle to continue splashing and dancing. She repeated this behavior a few times, starting off towards me and then changing her mind in favor of a puddle.10.25.10 puddles (3)

I finally had to pick her up and carry her in. She cried out for the puddle as we entered the gym.

I guess I fall just under the puddle in her scale of affection.

Yay! Nicole, my funny little girl!

Nicole is a funny girl.  She loves to cheer about stuff.  9.18.10 Nicole (3)She usually says “Yay!” followed by some noun.  Yay!  Shoes.  Yay!  Dog.  Yay! Tree.  Yay! Rain.  Yay! Bird.  Yay! Hotdog!  And when she watches something like Baby Einstein, she cheers about everything she sees.  Yay! Toy.  Yay! Cow.  Yay! Water.  Sometimes I like to try to get her to cheer about things that people usually don’t cheer about  Yay! Sitting., other times I use it to get her excited about something I want her to do.  Yay! Vegetables.  Yay! Sharing.

Nicole likes to dress-up.  She gets the dress-ups out and puts on a hat then wears the hat the rest of the day and cries if it falls off.  9.22.10 Nicole (5)Or she’ll wear a purse around her neck for hours.  Recently, she was putting dress-up shoes on everyday and often putting them on her hands and her feet.  She doesn’t dress-up in order to play out some scenario or pretend that she is someone else.  She just puts dress-ups on and then goes about her day.

She also likes to carry things.  When she wakes up in the morning she emerges from her room with her arms full of any combination of stuffed animals, dolls, and books.  Some days I think she’d carry her stuffed George around all day if I’ll let her.  I have to pry it away from her at times when we’re going to the gym.  She recently noticed a stuffed bear that I had in the garage in a pile of things to donate.  Now, every time she goes out to play, she carries the stuffed bear around the entire time she’s outside.9.28.10 playing outside (29)Another thing about Nicole that makes me laugh is that she calls every baby and doll Ila.  The kids were watching a documentary called Babies that was about 4 babies from different parts of the world (Tokyo, near Mongolia, San Francisco, and Africa).  The first scene was in Africa and the baby started to cry.  Nicole said “Oh, no Ila.  Ila need a hug.”  The next scene was of the baby in Tokyo and Nicole said “nother Ila.”  Throughout the entire movie, she continued to call every baby Ila.9.13.10 playing outside (39)

A Visit From my Mom

My mom came down to Tennessee to help while Zach recovered from his surgery.  She 4962941161_a4991147b3_b arrived on Friday night and was able to stay with the kids while I picked up Zach from the hospital and then got his perscriptions.  Zach was miserable all week and barely emerged from our room.  He ate almost nothing and mostly just wanted to sleep the week away (perhaps he will post more details about his torturous recovery). His reclusive recovery meant that my mother and I spent the entire week taking care of the kids together.

Charlotte really enjoyed lots of one-one time with her grandmother.  They played games and read together and Charlotte invented several new kinds of hugs just for Grandma.  On Thursday when I asked her if she wanted to go to the library with me for some one-on-one time she said “no, I like grandma Bunny more than you, mom.”  Charlotte is generally always eager for time with me, so I could tell that she was loving every minute with her Grandma (and I wasn’t worried, I know deep down she loves me more).4980163876_c490863cbe_bNicole was charming and cute, as always, and she took to her grandma right away.  Nicole gave her Grandma great hugs and Grandma enjoyed hearing her cute funny vocabulary.  When I took Isaac to school in the morning, Nicole came with me a few mornings and was very worried when Grandma didn’t get in the car too.  She’d start to cry and call out “Grandma, where are you?”  On Friday Grandma followed us to the gym in her car instead of riding with us.  Nicole fell to pieces when she saw Grandma get into her own car.  She screamed and cried and called out “Grandma, where are you?” and didn’t calm down the whole drive.4979529591_ff9f0bf1e9_b (1) Ila is still mostly a mommas girl, but on Thursday when I went to Isaac’s school, Ila finally let Grandma hold her and play with her without crying and was good the whole time I was gone.  She even ate the green beans that Grandma fed her.  Grandma was especially impressed with Ila’s great skill in playing with toys with her feet.4979542515_ce9453b834_bIsaac really enjoyed reading with Grandma.  He read some books to her and listened as she read to him.  Grandma remarked on how neat it was to read with him because he asked such thoughtful and intelligent questions and he really seemed to be enthralled with every topic they read about.  Grandma’s visit also gave me the opportunity to spend some time with Isaac at school which he was very excited about.4979568185_40fb3389c5_b

For Grandma

Because we miss you a lot and wish you were here.

Charlotte and Nicole Dancing:

Informative little Nicole:

Ila eats, claps, and “talks”:

Sorry, no Isaac video, I’ll have to capture one of him afterschool sometime for you.

Nicole’s Artwork

Nicole loves to color, but for some reason her favorite thing to color on is words.  This means that every-time I write her name on one of her drawings, she scribbles all over her name.  Here is an example of her Art:

image0-1 While scribbling some of the red scribbles she kept saying “oh, no Bunny.”  I don’t know if she was referring to an actual bunny or her Grandma Bunny.  She also calls squirrels bunny for some unknown reason so she may have even been drawing a squirrel.

The Un-Casting

She went from crying in pain all though the day and night, to getting her cast put on, but not knowing how to move.  She learned to crawl, climb, and walk.  She cried over not being able to bathe, she hated having her hair washed in the sink.  The cast cover was a bear to put on and take off, but it allowed her finally to bathe and swim and enjoy the beach.  In some ways it’s been a long 4 weeks, yet it also seems to have flown by.

Zach and I both wanted to go with her and we thought Isaac and Charlotte would want to see it come off.  Ila came along for the ride.8.9.10 cast removal (8) The nurse said that her mother makes these bears for the little children when they have their casts removed.  Nicole liked the bear and hugged it right away.  She cried in the van when she dropped it and couldn’t reach it. 8.9.10 cast removal (1)She cried and thrashed as the nurse tried to remove the cast. Zach did his best to hold her down, but she was panicked. 8.9.10 cast removal (3)8.9.10 cast removal (6)I was pleased to see that there were no toys or pennies inside.  Her leg was covered in dead and pealing skin, but not terribly dirty and the muscle had atrophied so that her right leg looked skinnier than her left.  The sore on her foot looked worse than I expected, but after a bath the blood and dried skin washed away and I could see that it was healing ok.8.9.10 cast removal (10)She was quite grumpy for the rest of the morning and cried when she tried to bear weight on her weakened leg and ankle.  By the end of the day she was limping around the house, mostly walking on her toes like she did with the cast on but starting to try a little flat footed walking.  Hopefully tomorrow brings more healing and more mobility.

Nicole’s Bath

Nicole loves the bath.  Not being able to bathe because of her cast has been a challenge.  She’d cry for a bath whenever someone mentioned one.  Three weeks and two days after breaking her leg, she was ecstatic to be in the bath again thanks to a waterproof cast cover.  I only wish we had thought to find one earlier.

Trapped?

I heard some noises that made me think Nicole was having some trouble, when I opened the door to her room, this is what I found:

Nicole Videos

I took this video of Nicole using her walker this morning

Later, I turned on So You Think You Can Dance while I fed Ila and Nicole just got up and started dancing in circles without her walker

And finally, this last one is just for fun.
