Birthday Cards for Grandma Bunny

Once again.  Here are some birthday cards the kids made for their other grandma.  I can say “other” because she never reads my blog.image2

Text (including random capitalization and punctuation errors):  Dear Grandma Bunny,

are you having a good Day!  It’s your BIRTHDAY!  Banana.  HAHA I made you read banana!  I mIss you

Love Isaac

Charlotte:image1 image0-2 image0-1 image1-1 I always love Charlotte’s cards because they’re unique and random, but usually include a box of bananas.image0image3

Isaac’s Second First Grade

Here’s his class picture for his school here in Washington:image1 Also, he wrote me this letter at school one day.  At first I wondered who “Kathliny” was and then I realized that it was me.image0

Birthday Cards

Here are the cards my kids made for their Grandma Cochran.  I love children’s artwork, especially when they start drawing more detailed drawings.  It’s a unique expression of what’s inside their brains.

Here’s Isaac’s letter.  He struggles with writing, but he is getting better.image0 Next is Charlotte’s.  Her card is my favorite because it’s the most unique and creative.  It is composed one piece of paper folded into a card.

Front:image1 Middle:  She asked me to write “I hope you’re having a good birthday” across the top.  The pen mark in the middle is Nicole’s unsolicited addition to the card.  She drew the forklift and then scribbled some blue on it that represents the wrapping paper.  She asked me to make a word bubble that says “I think this is a forklift.”  When she drew the box on the other side she said it goes from black to grey and then she drew a bow on top.  She wanted me to write that there are bananas in the box.image3 Back:  Both pictures are of grandma opening her box of bananas.  The yellow things are bananas.  Once again, she dictated the text that she wanted in word bubbles.  The green grandma makes me laugh because of the detail she added.  That grandma is sitting on a box and has a stomach, bottom, and hair.  She also has very long fingers.image4Nicole’s picture:  As she drew, Nicole said the following things:

  • It’s Grandma!
  • an elephant!
  • grandpa Bryan
  • I drawed an elevator
  • a toy!
  • She want draw a monkeyimage5  (Did you find all those things in there?  I think the grandma is the circles, the elevator is some veritable lines on the opposite side and I can’t even guess which ones the others are)

And finally, Ila’s drawing:  Nicole reached across to Ila’s picture a few times, so I can’t guarantee that every scribble is Ila’s.image0

Happy Birthday Grandpa Bird

From Isaac:image0 Isaac was originally going to write a chapter book about Grandpa’s birthday in which he surprised his grandfather by jumping out of the cake.

From Charlotte:

image1image2 image3image4image5 I wanted her to write her name on the back.  She refused to write it and said that if she wrote her name on the back then her book would be fiction and she wanted it to stay nonfiction.

From Nicole:image6 Nicole sang happy birthday as she colored, but stopped coloring when she recognized another opportunity to eat.

Letters to Grandparents

Here are some letters the kids wrote to their grandparents.  I had them in an envelope to send, but before I put them in the mailbox, we booked some flights for grandma and decided to just give them to her in person.image0 Isaac was going to write a letter to each grandparent, but then he realized how much work writing is for him and decided just to have grandma tell him he loves him too.image1 This is the longest letter Charlotte has hand-written to date.  The pink person in the red box is Charlotte.image2

And this one is from Nicole.

Feeding the 5,000

Charlotte drew this picture in primary today: image0There’s something artistic about the picture to me.  She said it was a picture of Jesus feeding the people the fish and the loaves.  (Can you find Jesus?  He’s the one holding fish and loaves in his hand.)  She said they were at church and they were hungry and he fed them.

Nicole’s Artwork

Nicole loves to color, but for some reason her favorite thing to color on is words.  This means that every-time I write her name on one of her drawings, she scribbles all over her name.  Here is an example of her Art:

image0-1 While scribbling some of the red scribbles she kept saying “oh, no Bunny.”  I don’t know if she was referring to an actual bunny or her Grandma Bunny.  She also calls squirrels bunny for some unknown reason so she may have even been drawing a squirrel.

Happy Birthday Grandpa Cochran, From Charlotte

10.9.08 Isaac, Charlotte, and Grandpa Cochran (1)

Charlotte:  I want to tell him something that I never telled him before.  I want to tell him grandpas have pianos.  That’s what I never said.

Me:  What do you think grandpa should do on his birthday?

Charlotte:  I think he should play his piano.

Me:  What else should he do?

Charlotte:  I think he should turn on his lamp next to his piano.

Me:  can you think of anything not in the picture?

Charlotte:  He should buy some balloons.  I want him to open some presents.

Me:  What do you think his presents should be?

Charlotte:  cars, and tracks for them and some things I seen before that he doesn’t have.

All the Planets and the Solar System

This is a book that Isaac wanted to write.  After seeing the story that Charlotte wrote (posted previously), Isaac really wanted to make a book.  He became really impatient.  I told him I couldn’t help him until after Nicole was taking a nap and Ila was settled.  He had a hard time waiting, but eventually calmed down by preparing for his story with a stack of books and a cartoon.

He insisted that he wanted to write a non-fiction book and it’s partly that.  I’m fairly sure he made up some of the facts, but he didn’t know enough about some of the planets so we had to read parts of some books he had checked out from the library.  He picked out the facts to include and on several of them the facts came directly from his brain—I bet you could guess which facts are his.4.30.10 All Planets and the Solar SystemHe insisted that I give myself credit for writing the words, but thought I should write Kathleen as my name.  Later he said that it has all those things for him since he did most of the work.

This post is a long one so click on the link to read on if you want.  The first few pages are probably my favorite because they come mostly from ideas within his brain.  I opted for making a thorough accounting . Now, you can check them out here  to know how I have carried out accounting for the sake of family history/journaling.

A Cupcake for Nicole

Charlotte is a creative little girl.  If you start making up a story, she’ll add to it.  Today I decided to see what she could create on her own.  I only helped her with prompts like “what would she do when she is a great-grandma?”  The sequence, ideas, and pictures all came from her.

Again, the line on top baffles me, I shall have to ask her.4.30.10 A cupcake for Nicole (3)Picture Note:  The circle with a dot is a belly with a bellybutton.  The other picture is a bowl of Marshmallow Mateys.4.30.10 A cupcake for Nicole (4) Picture Note:  The green picture is celery.

This story has inspired Isaac to write his own, only he wants to write a non-fiction book about Space.

Hug

I realized awhile ago that Isaac thinks the defining characteristic of a hug is to have your cheeks touch.  So you can hug without using your arms.  I’ve noticed that sometimes when he has been asked to give someone a hug, he just lean towards them with his face.  He brought home this picture that he drew at school of a hug and I loved it so much that I scanned it into my computer and posted it here on my blog.image0-1 I love that the stick figures have no arms, but they are face to face and I love the smiles on their faces.  The smiles seem to portray feelings of being happy and secure.  I like to think that Isaac feels happy, secure, and confident in his parent’s love.

Charlotte(s)

Charlotte has missed all the little girls her age back in Utah.  IMG_6894In primary, there are no  girls in Isaac’s class and she’s the only girl in her class.  So the closest girl in age is in the class one year younger than her and ironically that girl’s name is also Charlotte.  If that wasn’t enough of a coincidence, the other Charlotte’s birthday is the day before my Charlotte’s birthday (Charlotte C = 12/14 /05 Charlotte H = 12/13/06).

Anyone who knows my Charlotte knows that she loves her name.  For a long time, the phrase you’d hear her say the most was “I’m Charlotte.”  The day she3.4.10 Charlotte and Charlotte severed her thumb, we knew the pain was relieved when she looked at us and said “I’m Charlotte.”  So you can only imagine her excitement to meet another Charlotte who happens to be close to her age.

She announced to me the other day that she wanted to write a book about Charlotte coming.  She choose paper the color of the sun and came up with the text all on her own.  For days she would make comments about the other Charlotte regularly.   She’d say things like “the other Charlotte likes pink too.”  Today, after Charlotte H left, she said “Jesus accidently made two Charlottes.  One is four and the other is three.”

Father’s Day Cards

I had the kids make cards for their dad for father’s day.  Basically, we make a little book and I ask the kids what it should say and then they draw and I label.  Their books always make me laugh. To see the cards, click on the link below
