Grandma O’Bryant’s House, Part 3

I have no pictures for most of the next few rooms, unfortunately.  Grandma’s bedroom was at the end of the hall. I remember thinking that she had the softest bed in the world. Her blankets were a light turquoise and she had a headboard with shelves. She probably had books up there, but I only remember an alarm clock and lotion. I remember thinking her bedroom light was neat because she had a dimmer switch on it and I’d never seen one before. She had a tall dresser on the wall between the door and the closet where she kept a TV. She liked to turn the TV on sometimes to help herself fall asleep. On the other side of the bed was a tall bookshelf and a tall spinning chair like the kind in the living room (curved wood with patterned cushions). She had a dog bed in her room while Mitsey was still around. Across from the bed was a long dresser with a big mirror over it. She kept pictures of grandchildren on the bookshelf and on the dresser with the mirror. She had a bathroom with a shower, sink and toilet in her bedroom.

Between grandma’s bedroom door and the kitchen door was a bathroom. This was the only bathroom with a bathtub. The bathtub/shower had glass sliding doors. Across from the tub was a long counter top with toys stored in the cupboard under the sink. My favorite of grandma’s bath toys was a little people cruise ship. Grandpa kept his diabetes medication in this bathroom. I remember seeing the needles in a drawer and being afraid of them.

OBryant 0197 To describe the next part of the house I have to skip back through the hallway, kitchen and dinning/living room. On the opposite side of the livingroom just past the fireplace, there was small hallway with one door leading to the stairs and directly across from that door was a door leading into the red room. The red room had bright red carpet. When I was young, my mom and dad always stayed in this room. It had an extra big bed, it’s own bathroom, and a big walk in closet. I also remember a tall dresser and a painting of my aunt Kathleen above the dresser. There was a vanity in the room as well, it was the kind with a big mirror in the middle and drawers along the sides.

At the end of the small hallway was a laundry/play room. There was a bookshelf along the wall to the left where grandma kept books and toys. Next to the bookshelf was an upright freezer and next the freezer was a door that led to a long closet where grandma kept her brooms and mops and other such things. The closet door was in the corner and the wall that extended next to the closet had a window, a sink (as seen in the picture) and her washing machine.  The dryer was on the next wall along with a table that was kept up against the wall across from the door.

Oh how you make me miss her. I loved the cruise ship and the “Red” room was my favorite. I am amazed at your memory! You remember such wonderful details that it all seems so real. Thanks Kathleen.

I love these posts too. I check back frequently to see if you’ve posted another one. Not that I don’t remember the house, but that it’s nice to see that others share the same warm memories of gma’s house. Remember the fireplace smell when you come up the stairs by the red room? I still catch hints of that smell sometimes and it takes me right back to that spot…

Hey! I made it on your blog! I love reading everything about grandma’s house….it brings back such fond memories. I was really sad when she moved.

It’s amazing that here I am almost a year after her death and I still cry just about everytime I hear or talk about her. She was just a great woman….I look forward to seeing her again someday.
